The 2011 Georgia High School Association traditional state wrestling tournament produced seven individual state champions from the Southern Crescent on Saturday at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
In perhaps the most intriguing match locally, Zack Brown of Locust Grove High School defeated Stockbridge's Shakeeno Jenkins in the 140-pound Class AAA Final to become the school's first state champion.
There was also a repeat state champion, as Henry County's Dalvin Tomlinson knocked off Columbus' Jamie Stark in the Class AAA 285-pound division. It was Tomlinson second state title in a row.
Tomlinson's teammate, Brett Yarbourgh, won the 119-pound weight class against West Laurens Bryce Carr. Locust Grove, which is just in its second year of competition, also put
Jared Benefield in the finals (130) and Bryan Sorrows (152).
Both wrestlers finished second.
Locust Grove finished the team competition in third place with 103 points. Henry County was fourth with 99 points.Two wrestlers from Union Grove finished in first place at the Class AAAA tournament as Griffin Higginbotham (103) defeated Rockdale's Alonzo Allen and Alex
Lazor won over Loganville's Zack Wolaver.
Union Grove's Hunter Gamble (160) ended his year with a second-place performance.
Lovejoy's Giovonte Ortiz captured first place in the Class AAAA 140-pound division with a win over Pope's Jake Hensen.
Omar Waller (189) became the first wrestler from Woodland to win a state title, beating Demtre Liguori from East Paulding.
Ola's Peyton Durflinger (112) advanced to the finals, finishing second.
Union Grove finished second in the Class AAAA team competition (90.5 points) behind state champion Pope (136.5).
Ola finished seventh with 55 points.
