Clayton County police responded to a phone call, early this week, regarding the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl.
The caller, a 15-year-old boy, is the suspect in the murder, according to Clayton County Police public information officer, Sgt. Otis Willis.
Willis said, as of Tuesday, the teen is charged with murder, and is being held at the Clayton County Regional Youth Detention Center. The 15-year-old is not being identified, because he is a juvenile.
Police could not confirm, on Tuesday, whether he will be charged as an adult. "It is based upon the [Clayton County] DA's office ... [They] will look at the evidence," Willis said.
According to Willis, the police responded to the incident in a wooded area about 1/4 of a mile from a home on Dunn Road, in Ellenwood, on Monday afternoon.
"Officers found a 16-year-old, white female, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, and was later pronounced dead at the scene," said Officer John K. Schneller, also a Clayton County Police public information officer.
The 15-year-old did confess to police that he shot the victim, police said.
"The suspect is cooperating with police and showed officers where he threw the weapon into a nearby creek," added Schneller.
"Members of the Clayton County Police Dive Team scoured through the [nearby] creek's frigid, murky water in zero visibility until they located the weapon this morning at approximately 11:30 a.m.," Schneller said.
The shooting resulted from some type of dispute, Willis said.
"It is alleged that they were dating," he added.
The name of the victim also was not released, Tuesday, due to the ongoing investigation, police said, and the fact both victim and suspect are juveniles.
