Leroy Merritt and Jalen Sage each scored 19 points to lead eighth-ranked Lovejoy to a 72-62 victory at home over Brunswick in the first round of the Class AAAA tournament Saturday.
Lovejoy (24-4) advances to the second round, where it will play at fourth-ranked Bainbridge (27-2), the No. 1 seed from Region 1, who cruised to a 78-47 victory over McIntosh. The Bearcats made the Class AAAA semifinals last season, losing 50-46 to Mays.
The Wildcats were hot from the beginning, with Merritt scoring all 19 of his points in the first half, including four 3-pointers. Whidley Guerrier added 14 points and nine rebounds.
North Clayton boys 52, Richmond Hill 49
North Clayton advances to the second round of the Class AAAA Tourament, winning against the No. 1-seed out of Region 2-AAAA.
The Eagles (16-13) will play at Hardaway (22-4), a 79-55 winner over Union Grove, on Wednesday.
North Clayton was led by Devin Lewis, who had 21 points. Marcus Hunt scored 18 and Michael Johnson added 14.
Henry County boys 64, Mary Persons 60
Dontavious Bega had 17 points to lead the Warhawks to a 64-60 victory at Mary Persons, the No. 1 seed from Region 2, in the first round of the Class AAA tournament Saturday.
Henry County (22-6) advances to play at Union Grove-Hardaway on Wednesday in the second round.
Zavier Rosser added 11 points for the Warhawks, while Larrentis Thomas added six points and 10 rebounds in his first game back since sustaining a wrist injury in late January.
Peach County boys 71, Stockbridge 69
Deshawn Badger missed a desperation shot at the buzzer, and Stockbridge fell 71-69 at Peach County in the first round of the Class AAA tournament Saturday.
Dante Campbell led the Tigers (15-11) with 25 points, but couldn't stop Peach County from erasing Stockbridge's 16-point halftime lead.
Peach County (9-16) was led by Ahmed Hill's 23 points, while freshman T.J. Sams added 15 points.
Hardaway boys 79, Union Grove 55
The hopes of a Southern Crescent matchup between North Clayton and Union Grove in the second round of the Class AAAA Tournament ended Saturday when the Wolverines lost at home.
Union Grove ends its season with a 14-11 record.
George Walton boys 72, ELCA 59
George Walton is in its first year of GHSA competition after making the move from the GISA, but are ranked No. 10 in the gasports.com Coaches' Class A coaches poll.
With the loss, ELCA closes out its season with a 21-8 record.
