New year starts with key basketball matchups Tuesday

It's the start of a new year and with it, comes a full-slate of key region basketball games.

That includes the renewal of county and region rivalries.

It all starts back on Tuesday when 11 different girls and boys' doubleheaders get things started.

Key matchups include Stockbridge at Eagle's Landing, Union Grove at Dutchtown, Riverdale at Forest Park, Morrow at Jonesboro and ELCA at Locust Grove.

The Eagle's Landing boys return to action after winnng the Chuck Miller Holiday Classic. The Golden Eagles have won six games in a row.

No. 10-ranked Jonesboro (11-2) traveled to Puerto Rico right before Christmas and finished second in the Puerto Rico Hoops Championship, losing to Carmen Sol 47-46. Morrow broke a six-game losing streak when it beat Jackson 68-26 in its last outing.


Dutchtown went to the girls Final Four last year, but this year is under the direction of new head coach April Tate. The Lady Bulldogs are responding, having won six of the last seven games. The Union Grove girls have lost its last two games.

The Forest Park girls are ranked fifth in the latest poll, but have dropped three of its last four games. The Riverdale girls have struggled, losing their last three games.

Other doubleheaders on the slate tonight include, Woodland at Alcovy, Tri-Cities at Mundy's Mill. Creekside at Lovejoy, Mt. Zion at Banneker, Ola at Griffin and Strong Rock at Landmark

Girls games begin at 6 and boys games tip off at 7:30.
