Mr. Weyman Gray Sellers, of Fayetteville, passed away on Jan. 6, 2011. He was preceded in death by his son, Gray Sellers; parents, Thomas Clephton and Alice Gray Clephton, and sisters, Jane Bramlett and Margie Pierce. He is survived by his wife, Paula Sellers; daughters, Wey Casper and husband, Wayne, and Donna Hatfield, all of Watkinsville; grandchildren, Paula Truluck and husband, Mike, and Weyman Casper and wife, Alecia, all of Watkinsville; great-grandchildren, Jacqueline Truluck, Lauren Gray Truluck, Le Anna Truluck, Lyla June Casper, all of Watkinsville; sisters, Doris Dellinger and Annette Shirah, both of Albany; special sister-in-law, Donna Holbrook, of Monroe. Weyman Gray Sellers was inducted into the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame on June 5, 2010.Coach Sellers was a head football coach for 39 years at Athens High School, Jonesboro High School, Pebblebrook High School, Lithia Springs High School, Eagles Landing High School and Fayette County High School. His 39-year record was 250 wins, 112 losses, 7 ties, while winning two state championships, one state runner-up title, and eight region championships. His team was recognized by the Georgia State Senate and the State House of Representatives in 1970. Coach Sellers’ knowledge of the game of football, and longevity as a coach, have influenced players and coaches alike, from high school playing fields, to major colleges,and even the National Football League. Football greats, like Fran Tarkenton, remembered Coach Sellers: “He taught me the fundamentals of playing quarterback, the techniques that stood up for the rest of my career.” A funeral service will be held TODAY (Saturday, Jan. 8), at 3 p.m., at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Westmoreland and the Rev. Glenn Stringham officiating. Burial will follow at Westminster Memorial Gardens.
