The Morrow Mustangs turned a close two-point lead at the break into a second-half rout Friday night.
It was good enough for a 68-45 victory over visiting Mundy's Mill in front of a packed Morrow gymnasium.
For Morrow it was a chance to get back on track after struggling at times this season. The Mustangs lost a heartbreaker to fourth-ranked Lovejoy on Tuesday, but recovered in Friday's victory for just their second Region 4-AAAA victory of the year.
The Mustangs improved to 6-19 overall and 2-8 in league play. Mundy's Mill dropped to 9-7 overall and 3-6 in region action.
The game stayed close in the first half with Morrow leading 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, but just 29-27 at the break.
Both teams found the range from 3-point territory in the first period to keep the game tight.
Mundy's Mill Ebere Azbuke converted on two 3-point shots in the first period and Jordan Faciane and Darius Coleman knocked down one trey each for the Mustangs.
Azbuke also converted on a trey for the Tigers in the second quarter to help keep his team close.
After the Tigers cut the Morrow lead to 38-37 on a basket by Chris Bryant, Morrow took over the rest of the way.
Morrow closed out the third quarter on a 15-0 run and extended the lead to 52-36 at the end of the period.
Dante Ottley added two massive dunks in the third quarter and finished as the game's leading scorer with 20 points.
Eleven different players helped put points on the Mustangs' side of the scoreboard as they rolled to their region win.
Azbuke led Mundy's Mill with 13 points.
Mundy's Mill 61, Morrow 37girls: On a night when a packed gym turned out, many wearing pink to support the Lady Mustangs; hopes to raise money for breast cancer, the Mundy's Mill Lady Tigers rolled to a 61-37 lead.
The Lady Tigers led from start to finish, building a 30-19 lead at the half and then pulling away when Morrow's shooting touch went cold in the third quarter.
Already behind by double digits at the break, Morrow took itself out of contention with a cold shooting third quarter. Morrow managed to hit just one shot from the field in the third quarter and fell behind 47-21 as the game moved into the final period.
Mundy's Mill was led by Brianna McQueen with 15 points. Kristina Bridges added 14.
Morrow as led by Carlesha Hart with 13.
With the victory, Mundy's Mill improved to 10-3 overall and 7-2 overall. Morrow dropped to 5-7 overall and 2-6 in league play.
