Lovejoy 140-pounder Giovanni Ortiz maintained his perfect record this season with a first-place finish at the Wildcat Rumble, hosted by Lovejoy on Saturday, defeating Redan's Jason Brown in the finals.
The senior was one of five Wildcats to place Saturday. Michael Whitney (119) and Corey Alexander (145) both advanced to the finals, but lost. Whitney was runner-up to Redan's Jordan Webb, while Alexander fell to Tucker's Carey Cloud, the reigning Class AAAA champion at 152.
Derek Holmes (135) placed third and Angelo Grisby (189) placed fourth for the Wildcats.
It was the first match for Lovejoy since winning the Area 4-AAAA duals title Jan. 8, which qualified the Wildcats for the State Duals on Feb. 25-26.
Two wrestlers placed for Mundy's Mill. James Thomas lost to M.L. King's Michael Taylor in the finals at 152. Trey Johnson (125) placed fourth for the Tigers, which lost to Lovejoy in the area duals finals to also qualify for the State Duals.
