A 62-year-old Lake City woman was killed in a house fire, after becoming trapped in a bedroom.
According to City of Morrow Fire Chief Mark Herendeen, authorities from the fire department's search and rescue crew located the victim, Patricia Smolek, early Sunday morning, in a room, in an attic space, that was converted into a bedroom area.
"The attack crew [from the fire department] was met intense smoke and heat as they progressed up the attic steps to the fire area," said Herendeen, in a written statement.
He added that the fire started in the attic space, near the bedroom area. The deadly fire took place at 5486 Oakwood Drive, in Lake City, shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday.
"The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time," Herendeen said, on Monday afternoon.
The fire was investigated local and state fire marshals and investigators, according to Herendeen.
He said Monday, that there was no foul play or suspicious activity suspected in the fire.
"Smoke detectors were throughout the home except for the attic space," he added.
Five adults were living in the residence at the time of the fire, according to Chief Herendeen.
"... four adults sleeping on the first floor made it out of the structure without incident," he explained.
Herendeen added that The City of Forest Park Fire department assisted Morrow with the fire.
