The Clayton County Water Authority's reservoir areas and Newman Wetlands Center are an option for families looking for inexpensive outdoor fun this holiday weekend.
The Blalock and Shamrock reservoirs, at 2610 Shamrock Road in Jonesboro; J. W. Smith Reservoir, at 143 Northbridge Road in Hampton; and Newman Wetlands Center, at 2755 Freeman Road in Jonesboro will be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday, from 7 a.m., to 8 p.m.
There is a $5 daily fee per vehicle for Clayton County residents at all CCWA reservoirs. Non-county residents pay $10 per vehicle. For Clayton County residents, a season pass is $30. Non-county residents pay $40 for a season pass. The season pass is valid from March, through October.
The Newman Center's half-mile trail and picnic areas provide visitors a chance to enjoy nature while learning the importance of preserving wetlands environments and conserving natural resources. In addition to more than 130 bird species, visitors have seen beaver, river otter, raccoon, muskrat, deer, wild turkey, mink, and many species of reptiles, insects and amphibians.
Dogs and other pets are not allowed at the facility.
