Riverdale golfer Mariah Stackhouse will have plenty to tell her friends when she gets back to high school at North Clayton next month.
While many of her friends are talking about summer jobs, Stackhouse can tell stories about competing against the world's best golfers at the U.S. Women's Open.
Stackhouse, who is playing as an amateur, finished the first round of the tournament with a 7-over par, 79.
Professional golfer Michelle Wie also fired a 79 in the first round of the tournament being played at the Broadmoor Country Club in Colorado Springs.
Nearly half the field was still on the course because of weather delays at around 6 p.m. Thursday, including defending champion Paula Cramer.
The early tournament lead was shared by Cristie Kerr and amateur Amy Anderson. The two golfers were each at 2-under par.
Stackhouse hit 10 of 14 fairways in the first round. She had eight bogeys, seven pars and two birdies.
She will have at least one more round on Friday before the field is cut in half.
