Benefield, Duane Arnold

Age: 61

Mr. Duane Arnold Benefield, 61, of Locust Grove, passed away July 8, 2011. Duane was born in Fulton County, Ga., the son of Annette McLeroy Benefield, of Fayetteville, and the late Douglas Aubrey Benefield. He was a member of Locust Grove First Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and enjoyed singing in the choir. He retired from the Clayton County Fire Department as an advanced paramedic with 30 years of service, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Fire Fighters, serving on the Honor Guard for numerous years, and a sergeant for a rescue unit. He also retired from Henry Medical Center with 30 years of service. Duane was in Scouting for 50 plus years. He was an Eagle Scout with two Palms. He was a Wood Badge Staff Leader with a Wood Badge for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and a Silver Beaver. He was known to his family and friends as Poppa Bear and Doober. He was a devoted husband, father, son and brother who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Survivors are his wife of 42 years, Jean Benefield, of Locust Grove; children, Jessica Benefield, of Locust Grove, David Benefield, of Locust Grove, and Adam and Kimberly Benefield, of Sandy Springs; grandchildren, Sahara, Samantha, Bryan, Rex and Douglas; sisters, Donna Holcomb (Tom), of Riverdale, and Adrenne Deason (Gordon,) of Orange Park, Fla.; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be Monday, July 11, 2 p.m., at Locust Grove First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Craig Bowers and the Rev. Ken Haag officiating. Interment will be at the Locust Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Winship Cancer Institute, 1365 Clifton Rd., Atlanta, Ga. 30322.
