Clayton County Board of Education members Alieka Anderson and Ophilia Burroughs were among those who welcomed students back to class at Elite Scholars Academy, Monday morning.

School officials say nearly 80 volunteers, including some of the school's faculty members and staff, offered a hand in greeting students for the first day of classes.

The 396 students were given bottles of water and personal computer storage devices, which were presented to them as gifts, said school officials.

Dr. Shonda Shaw, principle at the academy, said it was a "magnificent Monday," and the school appreciated all of the support from the volunteers.

This year, school officials say, the academy has expanded a grade level and now includes grades sixth, through tenth.

School will be back in session for all Clayton County Public Schools students starting Monday, Aug. 8.
