Newspaper advertising veteran Bob McCray has joined Southern Community Newspapers Inc., parent company of the Clayton News Daily, Henry Daily Herald, and Jackson Progress-Argus, as vice president of advertising.

In this newly-created position, McCray will oversee advertising operations for all seven SCNI newspapers, and will report directly to SCNI Executive Vice President Mike Gebhart, who is also publisher of the Albany Herald.

McCray is a familiar face at SCNI, having previously served as ad director and publisher of the Gwinnett Daily Post. He will be headquartered at the Post in Lawrenceville.

Gebhart said that McCray brings considerable skills to the position of vice president of advertising.

"I'm ecstatic to have Bob McCray on our executive management team," Gebhart said. "I've known Bob for nearly 30 years, and we have worked together in a couple of different markets over the years. I consider him to be one of the top newspaper executives I've ever encountered. He will make an immediate and long-lasting impact to the SCNI group of publications."

In his publishing career, McCray has served in middle and upper management advertising roles for the Miami Herald, Los Angeles Daily News, Akron Beacon, Philadelphia Enquirer and Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

He has also served as general manager of the Toledo Blade and the San Francisco Examiner. Most recently, he was president of Auto-Guide, and president and co-owner of Autoguide Denver.

McCray said he is eager to return to his newspaper roots.

"I am excited to join a group of newspapers that are so important to the communities and advertisers they serve," he said, adding that newspapers continue to be extremely relevant in their markets.

"Newspapers provide a number of powerful and exciting ways to reach consumers," McCray said. "Our goal is to be the No. 1 advertising option for all the merchants in our markets, and to help our customers grow their businesses. It is so important in today's economic environment for advertisers to keep their message in front of the consumer. And the newspaper is still the best, most cost-effective way to communicate to consumers through its myriad of print and online products."

Bonnie Pratt, publisher of the Jonesboro Group of SCNI newspapers -- which includes papers in Clayton, Henry and Butts counties -- said she is excited to have McCray "joining our team."

"Bob's expertise will add tremendous value to our sales and marketing team, which will translate into even greater returns on the investments our advertisers share with us," she said. "This is great news for our advertisers, our sales team, and our readers."

McCray and his wife, Janet, are the parents of one son, 8-year-old Ryan. They live in Dacula.

Southern Community Newspapers Inc., is made up of seven newspapers in Georgia -- the Clayton News Daily, Henry Daily Herald, Jackson Progress-Argus, Rockdale Citizen, Newton Citizen, Albany Herald, and Gwinnett Daily Post.
