Clayton State to host NCAA Division II women's basketball Southeast Regional

The bids are out, the brackets are filled, and the NCAA Division II women's basketball Southeast Regional is coming to Clayton State.

CSU's hopes of an undefeated season came to an end for the No. 1-ranked Clayton State Laker women's basketball team in Saturday as the Lakers dropped a tough 73-72 overtime decision against No. 12 USC Aiken in the semifinals of the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Tournament at USC Aiken's Convocation Center..

The NCAA Division II championship committee officially released the 64-team field for the 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament, and No. 1-ranked Clayton State was selected as the host sight for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals. The Regional will take place on Friday, Saturday and Monday (Mar. 11, 12 and 14) at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

This marks the second time that Clayton State, the Peach Belt Conference regular season champion, has played host to an NCAA Division II women's basketball Regional. The Lakers played host to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic in 2007.

Clayton State (29-1) will be the No. 1 seed in the eight-team Regional, and the Lakers will draw a familiar opponent in Friday's opening round. Clayton State will play host to Peach Belt Conference rival Francis Marion (18-9). The other opening round match-ups pit No. 2 Lander (27-3) against No. 7 Wingate (19-9), No. 3 USC Aiken (26-5) against No. 6 Tusculum (21-8) and No. 4 Georgia College (22-6) against No. 5 Barton (25-4).

The winner of the Southeast Regional will join the seven other regional champions at the 2011 NCAA Division II Women's "Elite Eight" in St. Joseph, Mo., on March 22-25.

For Clayton State, this marks an unprecedented seventh straight bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament – the most consecutive NCAA Division II women's basketball appearances a Peach Belt Conference team.

Francis Marion is making its ninth NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance, while Lander and Georgia College are each making its seventh appearance and USC Aiken is in for a fourth time.

Game times for each round will be announced later in the week.
