From Staff Reports

HAMPTON-- Following a record opening night, the thrilling excitement of straight-line speed returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway on Friday with the second week of Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine.

Record Numbers for First Week

The immense popularity of the excitement of drag racing on Friday Nights at Atlanta Motor Speedway continues to be evidenced as week one featured record-breaking opening night numbers.

An opening night record crowd attended the first week of Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine as fans in attendance were treated to a variety of cars in the Show-N-Shine portion of the night before being thrilled by the straight-line speed of drag racing during Friday Night Drags.

The opening night records weren't limited to the grandstands. A record number of opening night entrants competed in both the Friday Night Drags and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine.

"We couldn't have asked for a more successful opening night," said AMS president and general manager, Ed Clark. "Not only did we have a record number of fans in the stands for opening night, but it was the same for both our drag racers and MCR Safety Show-N-Shine competitors. The staff at AMS has such pride in witnessing the growth of Friday Night Drags. Our fans love the straight-line speed provided in a safe environment, while many take the opportunity to compete themselves. The fans and competitors continue to show their support by coming out every week and we are looking forward to a successful season."

New Divisions, Same Results

For Two Racers

The 2011 season of Friday Night Drags has brought change for two racers which ended 2010 in Victory Lane, with Bobby Bramblett and Austin Carden's respective vehicles changing divisions.

The new divisions don't appear to be affecting either racer so far, as both are coming off of wins in the opening week of Friday Night Drags. Bramblett, of Loganville competed in the Tuner Division at the end of 2010, but won this past Friday in Sport Compact in his Volkswagen Rail Car.

Carden, of McDonough claimed victory Friday in the newly-formed Junior Dragster Division. He competed in the Radical Division at the close of 2010.

The 2011 Friday Night Drags season will run on Friday nights through Aug. 19. Practice drag runs begin at 6:15 p.m. and grandstand gates open at 6:30 p.m. MCR Safety Show-N-Shine car show judging begins at 6:30 p.m. with the drag eliminations starting at 9:19 p.m.

All racers ages 16 and 17 must have a fully-executed minor's release form on file at the speedway prior to competition and forms are available at the Speedway or at www.atlantamotorspeedway.com.

Competitors must wear a DOT-approved helmet and have operational seat belts in their vehicle and pass a pre-race safety inspection.

Entry to drag race or for the MCR Safety Show-N-Shine is $20 or competitors can enter both for $30. Spectator admission is only $8 and exterior parking is free, while infield parking is $20.
