Zack Sims had no regrets.
Sure, he was disappointed in his runner-up finish in the Class AAA 1,600-meters race, but the Eagle's Landing senior was pleased with his effort.
"I was happy with the race," said Sims, a Georgia signee. "I left it all out on the track. I give it my all."
Sims had a time of four minutes, 16.28 seconds to finish runner up to North Hall's Cody Barger, who ran a 4:15.75 to win. Sims' teammate
Bailey Roth ran a 4:22.56 to place sixth as the Golden Eagles wrapped up the first day of the three-day meet with 15 points.
Eagle's Landing is tied with St. Pius for third place. Earlier in the day Billy Wright went 6-6 in the high jump to place fifth.
Sims will return to Memorial Stadium in Jefferson to compete in the 3,200 finals.
"I'm really looking forward to that now," he said. "I want a little payback."
Tanner Rogers was the lone area winner from Thursday's field events finals. The senior had a throw of 51-4.5 to win the shot put event. He becomes only the second ELCA state track champion at the school since it joined the Georgia High School Assocation.
Last season, ELCA's Luke Baker, who now runs for Georgia, won the 3,200 event.
Participating in his first state meet, Austin Smith of Mount Zion finished runner-up in the Class AAAA long jump. The South Carolina State football signee had a jump of 22-8.75 while going 6-0 in the high jump for eight place.
