Somewhere, Hank Williams, Jr. should be making his way to a recording studio to sing "Are you ready for some fishing?"
Local, young anglers, meanwhile, should begin pulling their fishing rods out of storage, stocking up on crickets or worms, and practicing their swings this week.
The Clayton County Parks and Recreation Department has announced it will hold a fishing derby, for children ages 13 and under, on Saturday, from 8 a.m., to noon, at Clayton County International Park's "The Beach," located at 2300 Ga. Hwy. 138, in Jonesboro.
Participation in the derby is free, and an adult must accompany children participating in the event, according to a flyer for the event.
The flyer also shows the first 200 participants to show up for the derby will receive a free T-shirt, while the first 100 participants will also receive a free admission ticket to "The Beach." There are four age divisions for children: ages "6 and under," "7-8," "9-10," "11-13." There will be awards for the youths with the heaviest fish, longest fish and the first youngster to catch an Albino fish.
The parks and recreation department will also hold additional fishing derbies at "The Beach" on June 18, July 9, July 23 and Aug. 6, according to the flyer for this week's derby. There will be a $5 fee to participate in those future derbies.
