Age: 62

Funeral Home: Pope Dickson & Son, Morrow Chapel

David L. Appling, Sr. Mr. David L. Appling, Sr., 62, of Morrow, received his pass to Heaven on May 10, 2011. David was a former U.S. Marine, faithful husband, loving father, “fun” grandfather, precious brother and “cool” uncle. He was born in Atlanta, to WWII, Iwo Jima, U.S. Marine veteran, Raymond T. Appling, Sr., and his wife, Ida Frances (Wallace) Appling. David graduated from Walter F. George High School in Atlanta, where he met his future, and surviving wife, of 43 years, Martha Ann (Bruce) Appling. David enlisted in the Marine Corps just after graduation to serve his country in Viet Nam. He then served on board the U.S.S. Newport News where they patrolled the Mediterranean. David was gentle, silly, dare-devilish and kindhearted. He was also brave and tough as a Marine, while protecting his post and had orders to “shoot to kill,” if necessary. David is survived by his sons, David L. Appling, Jr., of South Carolina; Alan Cullen Appling of Covington; grandchildren, Cynthia Marie, Christopher Matthew and ,Cory Appling; brother, Raymond T. Appling, of Florida; sister, Karen (Appling) Wilkes, of Forest Park; and many nieces and nephews, who will never forget their “great” uncle. While the family misses him dearly, they rejoice in knowing that “death is not the end.” The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1p.m., to 3 p.m., and from 6 p.m., to 8 p.m., TODAY (Friday, May 13). Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, May 16, in the Morrow Chapel of Pope Dickson & Son. Interment will follow at 2 p.m., in the Georgia National Cemetery.
