Henry County Relay for Life has surpassed its goal of raising $315,000 this year for cancer research and awareness.
At last tally, the organization had raised $366,572.22, according to Nola Crane, this year's accounting chair for Henry County Relay for Life.
"We are still collecting, and this number will increase by August," said Tonya Brantley, chairperson for the annual Relay event.
The volunteer-driven campaign is aimed at raising money for the American Cancer Society to support cancer research and increase cancer awareness.
Brantley estimated nearly 3,000 took part in this year's Relay event, held April 29-30, at Ola High School in McDonough. She noted the event included more than 100 Relay teams and 2,000 individuals who raised funds in support of the cause.
The Relay for Life web site recognizes top fund-raising teams including: East Lake Elementary School, which raised more than $21,000; Timber Ridge Elementary School, which raised more than $20,500; and Dutchtown Middle School, which raised more than $15,900. Top individual contributors were listed as: Chrissie Long, raising more than $15,600; Nola Crane, raising more than $3,600; and Sean Shiplett, raising more than $2,900.
However, fund-raising efforts will continue throughout the summer, Brantley reiterated. Those interested in making a donation should visit the Henry County Relay for Life web site, at www.relayforlife.org/henryga.
