The Holy Bible tells us in Ephesians 2:8 and 9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast."
The Grace of God (Love of God) is activated through our faith, our belief, our prayer and worship of God. Romans 10:13 says: "Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved." Saved from the wrath of God on judgment day; saved from going to Hell and saved to go to Heaven. One calls on the Lord through faith, and in prayer, and asks for forgiveness of his sins in Jesus Christ's Name.
John 3:16 has been called the gospel in one verse. "For God so loved the world (Mankind) that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." Many overlook the very next verse, John 3:17, which says, "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him."
Obviously, the "world" as used here means all mankind. Matthew Henry, in his Commentary, said the apostles and disciples were to go into all the world, all nations and persuade them to believe in Jesus Christ, and to bring them into the church. They surely shared the gospel with them, and the Lord saved all who believed and repented of their sin.
Those who read my column know that I have the privilege of witnessing to many soldiers at the airport each week, and many of them believe the gospel of Jesus Christ when they hear it and pray to receive Him as their savior.
As I share with them how God loves them and wants to have a relationship with them, I tell them I want them to pray a prayer with me that will allow them to admit their sin, and ask God, in the Name of Jesus Christ, to forgive their sin.
I tell them we call this prayer the "Sinner's Prayer," and I will say a phrase and they will repeat it after me, so we will cover all the things we must say. Many want to pray; they know they have sin in their life; they both want, and realize, they need God's forgiveness and want to establish a relationship with Him.
Last Friday, was a normal day at the airport. There were about 150 soldiers reporting there to catch a flight back to their stations in the Middle East. I was able to talk with 32 of them, and 23 prayed and asked for forgiveness of their sins and established their relationship with God. Because of their prayer, they knew they would go to heaven when they died.
Each one was glad I talked with them about the Lord, and many said they sure felt better. I follow up with them as best I can, realizing they are about to catch a flight and there's no time for teaching or baptism. I just pray God will watch over them and keep them safe.
As we pray the Sinner's Prayer, I first tell them they must mean what they say, and if they do, God will honor their prayer. I feel that each one is saved as they sincerely pray and ask for God's forgiveness through Jesus Christ and in His Name.
It is true, we are saved by Grace through our faith in Jesus Christ. There is no other way but God's way, no other savior than Jesus Christ. If you happen to be reading this column today, I pray you know Jesus Christ as your personal savior. But, if not, please put your faith in Him, believe in Jesus Christ, who died for you.
I pray you will.
