Jermaine Botts was breaking a sweat on the treadmill at the Stockbridge Snap Fitness Center.

Botts said he has been a member of the center for a year, and is glad the facility is expanding. "I see more people coming in here," said the Stockbridge resident. "It is getting a little crowded, so with the expansion, it is going to really help out a lot."

Kevin Riley, general manager of the fitness center, said members will soon enjoy an extra 1,500 square feet of space in the facility, which is located at 1005 Brentwood Parkway. The additional space will be complete on June 6. Work began about two months ago, and represents a $20,000 investment, Riley said.

He said the expansion has been a goal at the fitness center since it began operations. The suite next to the fitness center was bought about two months ago, to alleviate the overcrowded atmosphere, he said.

"We just got our certificate of occupancy just this morning," said Riley, on Tuesday.

The expansion is needed, due to a growing number of members, said Riley. From the month of January until now, the fitness center has experienced an increase in membership of 25 to 35 percent, he said.

"The community is just really receptive to us ... everybody has been great here in Stockbridge, and we just want to give back and expand it."

The additional space will be used to house free weights and new Matrix and Cybex exercise equipment, leaving more room in the original 3,000-square-foot facility, he explained.

"We are actually clearing out some space in our existing facility, which is going to open up ... for personal training, group training and new state-of-the-art equipment," Riley explained. He added that new cardio exercise equipment and new TVs will be added in the current space.

The additional space will also have a small room where supplements will be available for sale, said Riley. Currently, the supplements are displayed in a small cart at the entrance of the center.

Riley said the fitness center is more than just a place to exercise. The personal relationships the staff continues to develop with members has caused the business to grow, he said. "It is almost your second family," he said.

"It is an indirect reflection of the staff, of the hard work and dedication they put in. It is definitely what caused the expansion," he continued.

Avaline Reid, of Stockbridge, said she comes to workout at the Stockbridge Snap Fitness Center three times a week, and enjoys the ongoing communication staff members maintain with her. "It is small, you know the people you are working with," she said.

The fitness center has also gained new members, because of its marketing and advertising skills, Riley said. The exercise facility offers special rates for employees of local businesses and advertises its corporate deals. It also participates in local events, at least once month, to lure new members, he said.

Riley said he also oversees the Hampton Snap Fitness Center, which has also experienced an increase in membership since it opened in June 2010.
