‘Human error’ to blame for election miscount

There will be a recount Thursday morning in Forest Park because of a miscalculation of votes cast for an alcohol referendum.

The numbers returned Tuesday night showed that Forest Park voters rejected the measure that allows the city council to authorize package Sunday alcohol sales.

However, Elections Superintendent Dave Painter said Wednesday morning that the results are wrong. Painter knew Tuesday that the machine used to total votes was broken, but thought using a calculator was a quick fix.

"It's just human error," he said. "When we were running the calculator to determine the machine totals, we just got the wrong numbers."

Using unofficial totals, Painter now says the referendum passed by a difference of 38 votes, 369-331.

Painter said all the votes cast Tuesday will be recounted, but he doesn't anticipate a change in the outcome of the city council races.

"In my opinion, it won't change the outcome of the candidates' votes, but it will change the outcome of the alcohol votes," he said.

With the passage of the referendum, it is now up to the council to pass an ordinance approving Sunday alcohol sales. City Manager John Parker said the item is not on an agenda, yet.

"It may happen by the end of December, but it could be after the first of the year before they vote on it," said Parker.

Tuesday's vote ushered in one new council member, but the rest of the board remains the same. Latresa S. Akins, 28, won out over challenger Lillian Holloway by five votes, 129-124, in the Ward 4 race.

Longtime incumbent, Don Judson, 80, died suddenly Friday. None of the votes cast for him were counted, and voters were not allowed to cancel their early votes for Judson and re-vote for another candidate, said Painter.

Ward 5 incumbent, Linda Lord, was re-elected, beating challenger Warren Gerton, 328-245. Ward 3 incumbent Maudie McCord was re-elected without opposition.

The seats for mayor and wards 1 and 2 aren’t up for election until 2013.
