Forest Park High to host 'Scholarship Saturday'

Preparing for college can be a stressful time for a high school senior, with concerns over grade-point averages, entrance exams, college applications –– and perhaps the most daunting challenge of all –– finding enough money to pay the costs.

To lighten the burden on students, the Forest Park High School Scholarship Club will host a “Scholarship Saturday” event Nov. 12, from 10 a.m., to 1 p.m., in room 230 of the school, located at 5452 Phillips Drive, in Forest Park.

The event will allow students the opportunity to search for, and apply for, multiple scholarships, without any interruptions or distractions.

"Students may bring their laptops, and parents are welcome to join as this is a team effort, with all of our stakeholders," said Tavane Moore, club advisor and world languages chairperson at the school.

The Scholarship Club was started last school year to help students find money for college, Moore said. She added that many eligible students believed they would not be able to apply for college, because of not having a high-enough grade-point average. Another, perhaps bigger, deterrent for students, she indicated, is that many of them do not want to be burden down by school loans.

"My goal in starting the club is to empower students to be able to research, apply for [scholarships], and filter out scams, versus legitimate scholarships," she said.

Moore said during the club’s weekly meetings, students learn about grade-point-average requirements, the American College Test (ACT), the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), how to apply for college, and how to search for scholarships.

She added that they even talk about the requirements for various majors and careers, and study-abroad programs in high school and college.

"Students are actively asking, and teaching, each other about what they know, and the progress they are making," Moore said. "All grade levels are eligible, and have joined because there are scholarships available to freshmen and sophomores."
