Businesses combine efforts to support troops

A Stockbridge brokerage firm is hosting a shoebox drive. It is designed to send gift-wrapped care packages to Southern Crescent troops, and their comrades, serving overseas during the holidays.

The "adopt-a-troop" shoebox project is a first for Trust Realty, LLC, which is spreading the word to local businesses and schools.

Organizers of the drive hope to fill plastic shoeboxes with simple items such as: playing cards, snacks, candy, reading materials, toiletries and stationery supplies.

"Given the state of the economy, we felt like the shoebox project was a small enough project that people could actually afford to contribute items," said Lisa Lee, managing broker at Trust Realty.

The items, and the plastic shoeboxes, can be donated separately, said Lee, noting a list of suggested items are available on Trust Realty's web site, www.trustrealtyofga.com.

Lee said the firm is partnering with Leeland Landscape, at 1533 Jodeco Road, in Stockbridge, and Jodeco Academy, at 4250 Jodeco Road, in McDonough, to serve as collection sites, along with Trust Realty, at 175 Andrew Drive, in Stockbridge.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to collect at least 200 shoeboxes. That is our goal," said Sophia Townsend, director of Jodeco Academy. "My entire family is military, and I believe the troops do a great job sacrificing for us. So, I believe we should give back to them."

Lee said the three locations — Leeland Landscape, Jodeco Academy, and Trust Realty — will be accepting weekday drop-offs, from 9 a.m., until 5 p.m. Trust Realty also will be open an additional day on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m., until 2 p.m.

"In order to get these packages to the troops in time for the holidays, we must receive shoeboxes by Nov. 21," said Lee. "If you don't have time to wrap your shoebox, we will handle it. We'll have a group of volunteers to help gift-wrap boxes."

Lee said the shoeboxes will be shipped through Fort Gillem, in Forest Park. Contact Lee at (678) 284-1414.
