Katie R. Johnson

Katie R. Johnson (formerly Nicholson, nee Webb), passed away on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy Barton, of Morrow; son, Scott Nicholson, of Morrow; granddaughter, Jessie Barton, of Stockbridge; sisters, Faye Galbreath, of Emanuel County, Ga., and Mattie Lou Claxton, of Savannah.

Katie was born in Toombs County, in South Georgia, to Allen and Ida Bell Webb. After high school, she went to Augusta for secretarial school where she met and married Wilbur G. Nicholson (Nick). They moved to Pennsylvania, and had their two children. He passed away in 1969 and she relocated to Georgia to be near her family, and raised her children alone.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and her sisters, Lillian Hutcheson, Frances Nichols, Nettie Pearl Page, Audrey Lee, Beverly Jones; and a brother named Floyd.

She loved reading and getting together with her family at yearly reunions, and any day, you were welcome to visit her. She never said no to a friend or relative in need. She was happiest when she was able to help someone.

Most of all, she gave her time to people, whether driving older friends to doctors appointments, staying with someone after surgery, dog-sitting, visiting sick friends all over Georgia, checking on her friends’ well-being –– and she always prayed for everybody.

She was a receptionist for Georgia Power until she retired. She joined the retired Ambassadors Group and stayed in touch through the years, with those friends, with monthly lunches and trips. All who knew her, loved her and she loved all of us and she will be greatly missed.

Visitation for friends and family will be TODAY (Friday, Nov. 11), at Ford-Stewart Funeral Home, from 3 p.m., to 7 p.m. Then, she will be viewed at Chapman’s Funeral Home, 1-478-237-3800, in Swainsboro on Sunday, Nov. 13, from 12 p.m., to 2 p.m. She will be buried at New Bethel Baptist Church Cemeteryin her family plot.
