Henry Medical Center issues call for coats

The Henry Medical Center wants to help needy families in the Southern Crescent area to bundle up.

The hospital, on Tuesday, will begin its third annual "Share Your Comforts & Heart with Those in Need" Coat Drive.

Coats will be accepted Nov. 22, through Dec. 15, in Henry Medical's South Tower and North Tower lobbies, the Foundation Education Center, cafeteria, Marketing Department, and the lobby of the Laurel Park nursing home, adjacent to the hospital.

This year marks the first coat drive which will be conducted solely by the hospital. The 2009 endeavor was coordinated with Connecting Henry, a McDonough-based service organization. The 2010 drive was organized with the Community Transformation Group, located in Stockbridge.

"The first year we did the drive, we collected over 300 coats," said the hospital's marketing director, Donna Braddy. "Last year, we collected approximately 200 coats and about 50 blankets. This year, we are focusing strictly on the coats."

Donations also can be made at the McDonough Medical Pavilion, 101 Regency Park Drive, said Henry Medical Center's public relations specialist, Michelle Nunnally. She said the concept for the coat drive was born in 2009.

"We have staff and employees who are always looking for ways to support the community," said Nunnally. "This was an idea that we came up with to do that. We collect hundreds of coats each year, and they're donated out into the community."

Braddy hopes to match last year's number of coat donations. The Henry Medical Center has received positive feedback from past beneficiaries of the initiative, and staffers have a responsibility to pass their blessings on to others, she said.

"Henry Medical Center looks for ways to give back and help those in need," said Braddy. "By doing a coat collection, we are working to help those with the basic need of staying warm during the winter."
