John Robert Hearn, Jr.

John Robert Hearn, Jr., better known as Bob Hearn, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Emory Midtown Hospital. Bob was 79 years old and a resident of Jonesboro. He died of heart failure. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Autie Belle Hearn, and sister, Carol Ann Dyson.

Born with a lust for travel and adventure, Bob joined the Air Force when he was 17. He served as an air traffic controller in the Air Force for 20 years. He served in the Korean War and was also deployed to several “conflicts” around the world.

As a young Airman, he met his bride-to-be, Margaret Emma Ritter. They were wed on June 5, 1953. Upon retiring from the Air Force, Bob moved his family to Jonesboro, where he became an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA Center in Hampton. He retired from the FAA in 1979.

Bob had a private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying, riding motorcycles, scuba diving and camping, and most of all, he enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. He had a full life and was dearly loved by all. He was a member of Free Masons, the Jonesboro Lodge, the VFW and the American Legion.

The Hearns are members of Faith United Methodist Church in Riverdale. Bob was an active church member and served in several capacities. He loved his country, his family and his church.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ritter Hearn; four children and their spouses, Linda Hearn O’Connor, Debbie and Charles Boyd, Steve and Debra Hearn, Stan and Gina Hearn; and grandchildren, Sarah Jane, Maggie, Brittany, Steven, Sam, Carly and Gregory.

Visitation with the family will be TODAY (Tuesday, Nov. 22) from 3 p.m., to 6 p.m., at Ford Stewart Funeral home in Jonesboro.

The Funeral Service will be Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 11a.m., at Ford Stewart. Flowers, or a memorial to Faith United Methodist Church in Riverdale, Ga., will be accepted.
