Registration for the 2011-2012 youth basketball season will be Monday, Oct. 3 through Saturday, Oct. 22. Leagues and fees for the upcoming season are as follows:

• 5-, 6-, and 7-year-old co-ed Instructional League: $35.

• 9-, and 10-year-old Girls League: $55.

• 7-, and 8-year-old Boys League: $45.

• 11-, and 12-year-old Girls League: $55.

• 9-, and 10-year-old Boys League: $55.

• 13-, and 14-year-old Girls League: $55.

• 11-, and 12-year-old Boys League: $55.

• 13-, and 14-year-old Boys League: $55.

Registration will be accepted at the Recreation Office Mondays through Fridays, from 9 a.m., to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m., to 12 p.m. For more information on the upcoming youth basketball season, or to become a youth basketball sponsor or volunteer coach, call the Recreation Office at (770) 775-8228.

Stananco donates to department

Beginning Sept. 26, participants in the Parks and Recreation Department Soccer Program will receive certificates that can be redeemed for a free soccer ball at Stananco. After the 30-day program period, the Parks and Recreation Department will receive $2 for every Uniroyal tire sold to the general public on behalf of Uniroyal and Stananco. “Contributing to our local community and supporting our youth is so important to us,” said Stanley Maddox of Stananco. “We look forward to connecting with players and families from Butts County Parks and Recreation Department when they come in to get their free soccer ball.”

REC Force Tumble Registration

The department is still accepting registration for the REC Force Tumble Program. There are only a few spots left in the Thursday pre-k tumble and Thursday kindergarten class. If you would like to add your child to the waiting list for any class for the next session, call the Recreation Office. Classes are offered for boys and girls ages 4 to 17. Zumba is offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Butts County Community Center. The monthly fee is $30, or drop in for $5 per class. Annual Fall Festival Parade

The Annual Fall Festival Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 8, in conjunction with the Jackson Alive Family Festival. The Fall Festival Parade is an event for local organizations to showcase their youth group, including churches, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and school groups. If you would like to enter your youth group in this year’s Fall Festival Parade, contact the Recreation Office for an entry form.

Countywide Yard Sale

The Annual Fall Countywide Yard Sale is set for Saturday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m., to 3 p.m., on the vacant lot adjacent to the Butts County Administration Building on Third Street. Reserve a 10-by-10 space for $10 per space at the Recreation Office. The yard sale will be held in conjunction with the annual Jackson Alive Festival. Fall Break Day Camp

The Recreation Department will host Fall Break Day Camp Tuesday, Oct. 11 through Friday, Oct. 14 for children ages 5 to 12. Camp hours are 9 a.m., to 5 p.m. The department will offer pre-camp beginning at 7 a.m., and post-camp until 6 p.m. The camp fee is $60, and $2 for pre-camp and $1 for post-camp. Register at the Recreation Office by paying the $60 camp fee by Monday, Oct. 3. Pre-registration is required. There must be 15 participants enrolled by Oct. 3 to have camp.

Adult Freeplay

The Butts County Community Center Gym is open for Adult Freeplay every Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The fee is $2 per person.

Senior Center volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed to help in the delivery of meals to home-bound senior citizens in Butts County. Individuals, civic groups or churches may volunteer to deliver one or more meals once a week or more often.

Chair aerobics

Stay-Fit Chair Aerobics is offered at the Butts County Community Center Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. Chair aerobics promote increased circulation, spine stabilization, flexibility in ankles, stronger mobilization and postural muscles. Stay-Fit Chair Aerobics classes are free and open to all Butts County senior citizens. For more information on this program, call (770) 775-8238.

Blood pressure checks

Brightmoore Hospice will be conducting free blood pressure checks on Thursday, Oct. 18 beginning at 10 a.m., at the Senior Center. Free blood pressure checks are offered on the second Thursday of each month by staff from Brightmoore Hospice.

Free Movie Friday

The Butts County Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting Free Movie Friday at the Butts County Community Center. Friday, Sept. 30 will feature “Driving Miss Daisy.” Free Movie Friday is free and open to all Butts County senior citizens.

Seven Islands Artifact ID Day

The Butts County Historical Society, along with the Ocmulgee Archaeological Society and the Village at Indian Springs, will be hosting Seven Islands Artifact ID Day at the Indian Spring Hotel/Museum on Oct. 8 from 12 to 4 p.m. The public is invited to bring their artifacts to be identified and dated by members of the Ocmulgee Archaeological Society. The will be several artifact collections on display, flintknapping demonstrations by Dave Swetmon, as well as atl-atl, primitive weapons and friction fire demonstrations. Butts Transit

Butts County is part of a regional transportation system which provides public transportation for residents of Butts, Lamar, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties. The system operates under a demand-response model which means that there are no fixed routes, bus stops, or pick-up times. With demand response, citizens call in and order a trip 24 hours in advance, and daily routes are generated based on destinations requested. The fee is $2 per one-way trip.
