Police identify suspects in home invasion

Clayton County police released the names of four suspects involved in a Monday morning home invasion, including one who died when their getaway vehicle crashed in front of Riverdale High School.

Armed suspects forced their way into a home at the Pinebrook Apartments about 3:40 a.m. and demanded money and a Wii gaming system before fleeing the area in a red pickup, said Clayton Police Lt. Tina Daniel. When the truck later crashed in front of Riverdale High School, passenger Kenneth Fortson, 21, died. The other suspects fled into nearby woods but were taken into custody shortly after, she said.

Daniel said driver Denico Deangelo Hawkins, 34, of Atlanta, is charged with armed robbery and burglary. Ramon Gartez Blalock, 18, of Hapeville, is charged with armed robbery, burglary and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime. Quinton Lamont Oliver, 32, of Atlanta, is charged with possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, obstruction of an officer and giving false information to a police officer.

They are being held in the Clayton County Jail pending a bond hearing.

A Clayton County officer assisting with the home invasion call was injured when his patrol car crashed in a separate accident about three miles away, said Daniel. His K-9 partner was also hurt. The officer, who was not identified, was air lifted to Atlanta Medical Center where he was in stable condition. The dog was in serious condition at an emergency animal clinic.
