Good Shepherd Clinic to host 5K walk

A Morrow clinic, which provides primary medical care to needy and uninsured local residents, is inviting people to strap on their walking shoes to help raise money for the facility.

The Good Shepherd Clinic, known for its annual Tomato Sandwich Party fund-raiser, will host another of its annual fund-raisers -- its 5-kilometer health walk -- later this month. As has been the case over the past two years, this year's event is scheduled to be held close to Halloween. It will be held Oct. 29, from 7:30 a.m., to 10:30 a.m., at Clayton County International Park, located at 2300 Ga. Hwy. 138, in Jonesboro.

The health walk is the annual event that the clinic previously pitched as a Halloween "fun run." Jim Phillips, chairman of the clinic's board of directors, said the event is being revamped this year, however.

"We've revamped it this year, because we were competing with other running events in the area," Phillips said. "So, we just made it a 5K walk this year."

The clinic has also added free, limited health screenings this year. The screenings will be provided by medical professionals who volunteer at the clinic, from 7:30 a.m., till 10 a.m. More advanced lab work, which will include screenings for blood sugar, complete blood count (CBC), kidney function and prostate cancer, will also be available for $15 per person.

"We wanted to reach some people we hadn't reached before, by offering the health screenings, which are vital to early detection of issues, such as diabetes and blood pressure," Phillips said.

The cost to sign up for the health walk is $20 per person, and people who wish to participate in the event will be asked to register at the park's Nassau Building, on the day of the walk. Registration will last from 7:30 a.m., to 8:45 a.m., with the walk participants taking off at 9 a.m.
