Rotary Club inspires choirs to record CD

The sounds of Christmas are now available in songs by a collection of Southern Crescent church choirs.

The Henry County Rotary Club has worked to compile 10 Christmas tunes on a CD titled "A Henry County Christmas, A Collection of Christmas Songs." The CD was released this week.

"We are forever indebted to the participating churches, because without them, we would not have a fund-raiser," said the club's former president, Kerry Arnold.

The CD project began in August of last year, said Arnold. The most difficult task in completing it was handling the legalities of copyright laws, and licensing fees, he said.

The Rotary Club chapter recently held a CD release gathering at Eagles Landing First Baptist Church, in Stockbridge. The Christmas CDs are on sale now for $10 each.

The club president is featured on the 11th track of the CD, which is the spoken word. "It explains what the Rotary Club is and what we do," said Arnold. He also served as executive producer of the CD.

Selections featured include: "Mary Did You Know," performed by Wesley Way United Methodist Church Concert choir, "Angels We Have Heard on High," performed by Mt. Olive Baptist Church Combined Choir, "The Little Drummer Boy with Savior Glorious," performed by Pinecrest Baptist Church Choir, "A Silent, Holy Night," performed by Salem Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir, "Christmas Praise," performed by Salem Baptist Church Celebration Choir, "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," performed by St. James Catholic Church Lifeteen Band.

Other songs on the CD are "Go Tell it on the Mountain," performed by Eagles Landing First Baptist Church Classic Choir, "Gloria," performed by McDonough Presbyterian Church, "Light of the Stable with the First Noel," performed by Southern Crescent Baptist Church, "Ring the Bells," performed by First Christian Church of Stockbridge, and a special narration by Arnold.

Bill Turpin and Steve Rawls of Real 2 Reel Studios, in Jonesboro, mastered the CD for the club.

"We put it all together and compiled it so we could get some continuity to it," said Turpin.

St. James Catholic Church was the only choir that actually recorded their song in the Clayton County studio. The remaining choirs delivered their pre-recorded tunes to Turpin.

Choir members, along with ministers of music, heard their compilations for the first time during the event.

"I love the diversity of the CD," said Eagles Landing First Baptist Church Associate Worship Pastor, Matt Duren. "To hear it all come together, it just showcases how diverse Henry County really is."
