Jonesboro quarterback Cedric Nettles and his teammates are currently alone in second place in the Region 4-AAAA standings heading into Saturday's game against North Clayton.
Football weather’s finally upon us, and now Luella can get back to the business of winning.
The Lions have had a rough run of things lately, running the gamut of Region 2-AAAAA playoff teams and coming up 0 for the gamut.
Langston Hughes, tonight’s visitor, hardly is of the same stock as East Coweta, Stephenson, M.L. King and Newnan — the teams who took the Lions from 3-0 to 3-4. The question is, how much better have the Lions gotten for having hung in there against their region’s best?
Langston Hughes, it says here, will find out. The Panthers beat Luella 23-21 last season, but the Lions have more than made up the disparity that separated the two teams last season. Just as the Lions did against Villa Rica, so shall they do to Langston Hughes in what will amount to a happy homecoming.
The weekend’s best game doesn’t even take place tonight. Jonesboro renews acquaintances with North Clayton at Tara Stadium on Saturday, and until now the Eagles have held the upper hand, winning seven in a row.
That streak ends Saturday.
Picking against Jonesboro last week when the Cardinals played Lovejoy, was tough enough, but now is hardly the time to get carried away with it. Expect another low-scoring affair, but this is the time for the Cardinals to regain that winning swag.
As long as we’re talking about reversing last year’s results, expect Drew and Alcovy to join that parade. Both have improved mightily over last season.
I would pick Strong Rock Christian to defeat Whitefield Academy, a couple of teams with identical overall records, except for one thing: None of my upset picks has panned out. I asked the good folks at First Presbyterian Day if there was much difference between Whitefield and Strong Rock and they couldn’t tell the difference. The Vikings beat both by identical 28-10 scores.
Then the folks at Southwest Atlanta Christian chimed in. They said Whitefield clearly was better, as evidenced by the fact that Whitefield beat them by 22 while they beat Strong Rock by 17.
I looked for somebody else to ask and there was none. Reluctantly, therefore, I’ll take Whitefield and be happy to be wrong.
