Hundreds attend National Night Out

“That was awesome,” shouted 5-year-old, Christopher Smith.

The youngster’s exclamation was about his visit to the annual Henry County National Night Out held Tuesday.

The Henry County, Hampton, and Locust Grove police departments, along with the Henry County Emergency Management Service, Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office as well as members of their HERO unit, and Georgia State Patrol joined in hosting the annual event, held at Henry Town Center, in McDonough. It is designed to encourage solidarity between the community and those in public safety. Residents got a chance to see equipment and vehicles used by lawmen. Sgt. Jason Duffey, an organizer, estimates about 700 people attended the event.

Children enjoyed inflatables and watched a canine demonstration by Officer Steve Torbush of the Henry County Police Department’s canine unit. There were weapons displays, as well as other exhibitions, including the landing and take-off of a sheriff’s-office helicopter. Children climbed aboard fire trucks, sat on Henry County Police motorcycles and sat in police cars.
