A two-block section of Jonesboro's Main Street, from West Mill Street, to College Street, will be closed to vehicle traffic for 19 hours Saturday for an event hosted by Arts Clayton, according to the town's Mayor, Luther Maddox.
Maddox said the street will be closed from 5 a.m., to midnight, so the local arts group can hold an invitation-only 25th anniversary dinner in a tent on the street, in front of the Arts Clayton Gallery. Although the event will be held Saturday evening, Maddox said the street needs to be closed off during the day so crews can set up for the event.
The mayor also said closing it off all day ensured no cars would be left on that two-block stretch of Main Street when crews arrived to set up for the dinner. He added that people will be able to get around the road closure by crossing the rail road tracks, to McDonough Street, at West Mill Street and College Street.
"[Arts Clayton Executive Director Linda Summerlin] called me up asking if we would close off the street up there for this event, and I told her, 'Well, OK, but you know we only do this once every 25 years,'" Maddox quipped.
