Officials say fire cause was arson

A Clayton County firefighter was injured battling a blaze early Tuesday morning that officials said was intentionally set.

Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services Battalion Chief Jacque Feilke said the firefighter was hurt when heavy debris from the ceiling fell on his head. He was treated and released hours later from Southern Regional Medical Center.

Feilke said the house on Old Dixie Road was engulfed in flames and smoke when personnel arrived about 3:30 a.m. The husband and wife living there told firefighters they feared their adult son was inside the burning home, she said.

"Firefighters diligently searched the burning structure, but were unable to locate the missing family member inside," said Feilke. "At this time, it is believed that he made it out of the fire."

Feilke said the fire was started intentionally, but the investigation is ongoing. Officials are still trying to find the couple's son for questioning, she said.
