A Gulfport, Miss. man who fled to Clayton County in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina admitted Monday in Superior Court he set up the robbery and shooting of a Jonesboro teen for his wheel rims.
Clayton Chief Assistant District Attorney Erman Tanjuatco said Joseph Jerome Dedeaux II, 21, pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated assault. He will serve 15 of 20 years in state prison, said Tanjuatco.
Dedeaux said he set up the scheme with another Katrina evacuee, Dominic Trent Stacey, to rob Andrew Todd Gibby, 19, of Jonesboro, of Gibby's wheel rims. Gibby was shot multiple times behind the Lovejoy Publix in November 2006 as he tried to get away in his 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. He died of his injuries.
Police said the car went over the edge of a 60-foot embankment, crashed through a fence and into a retention pond with about 4 feet of water. Gibby's passenger, Daniel Thomas Smith, 18, was also shot but survived.
"Dedeaux admitted he set up the crime but was not the shooter," said Tanjuatco.
Dedeaux was also charged last year with making contact with a trial juror through a Facebook posting.
Stacey, 22, is being held without bond in the Clayton County Jail pending trial in his case.
