Alejandro Bennifield doesn’t have any scholarship offers yet, but that soon may be changing for the Lovejoy quarterback.
If he keeps performing like he did at the recent Atlanta MVP Camp, offers will certainly start to pour in.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder was named the “Top Quarterback” at the one-day camp. Several college coaches and recruiting services personnel were in attendance.
“There were a lot of good quarterbacks at the camp,” Bennifield said. “I knew I had to step up my game. I was out there trying to impress the coaches.”
This past season, Bennifield passed for 1,490 yards with a 53 percent completion rate. He threw for 15 touchdowns as he helped lead the Wildcats to the Class AAAA title game against Tucker at the Georgia Dome.
Bennifield, who was a top reserve on the school’s basketball team, transferred last spring from Jonesboro High.
“He is athletic and he spins the ball well,” said Danny Parker, an associated editor/recruiting analyst for Scout.com wrote in his wrap-up of the camp.
“Alejandro is a real good football player and he is athletic,” Lovejoy coach Al Hughes said. “His results speak for itself. He will become a highly recruited player this year.”
Bennifield said performing well in front of several college coaches has boosted his confidence.
“It made me feel good, doing well against some good competition,” he said. “I’m not too worried because I know some offers will come.”
Lovejoy, which moves into the newly-created Class AAAAAA this season, will hold its spring practice the first two weeks of May. Last spring, several college coaches showed up daily to evaluate the talent at the school.
Earlier this week, Lovejoy running back Travis Custis committed to play at Georgia Tech. Wildcats tight end/defensive end A.J. Jackson and linebacker Zane Fields are highly recruited players on the team.
“I’m looking to put my best performance out there every time,” Bennifield said.
