No. 7-ranked Union Grove (14-5, 9-2) went into the seventh inning with a 4-3 lead, but an error and hit-batsman helped the Tigers take control of the game.
“It was just one of those games,” Wolverines coach Allen Franklin said. “We haven’t had one of those since the Whitewater game (a 7-6 loss). Hopefully, we got that out of our system before the playoffs come around.”
Cole Murphy led Union Grove with two hits, including a triple, Jake Pope hit a two-run ground-rule double to put the Wolverines up early and Devin Earnest went 1-for-3.
Despite the loss, Union Grove is still assured the No. 1 seed out of its sub-region for the Region 3-AAAA play-in games April 25.
The Wolverines have a crucial game Friday against No. 9 Harris County, who is currently first in Region 3B-AAAA. The winner would own the tiebreaker to claim the region title.
