Clayton County Public Schools will hold its third annual Promoting Student Achievement (PSA) Golf Tournament, on Friday, April 20, at Lake Spivey Golf Club, located at 8255 Clubhouse Way. The 18-hole contest will benefit the school system’s student scholarship fund and promote college enrollment. The cost to participate is $125 per individual, or $500 per four-member team. Payment must be received by Wednesday, April 18. The fee includes tournament play, a box lunch that is placed on golf carts, an awards dinner, and tournament gifts and prizes. Several levels of sponsorships are available that range from a low of $1,500 to a high of $5,000. Registration begins at 11 a.m., and is limited to the first 36 four-person teams. A shotgun start at noon will mark the beginning of the tournament, and a dinner and awards program will be held at 5 p.m., or at the completion of the contest. Mundy’s Mill High School will host a “Community Day Saturday,” April 21, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Community Day will include a yard sale on the school grounds starting at 7 a.m. Parents, faculty and staff will participate in the Comcast Cares, a day of volunteer service inside the school starting at 8 a.m. At 10 a.m., the school will host a parade to celebrate the Mundy’s Mill High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps championship win. The Clayton County Parks and Recreation Department invites seventh- and eighth-grade students to participate in the third annual scholarship opportunity to Jekyll Island. Students will have to write a 250-word-or-less essay about an outdoor activity they wish to participate in (must choose from a designated list outlined by the Georgia Children's Outdoor Bill of Rights). The deadline to submit all essays and application is April 30, 2012. A total of 12 students will be chosen to attend a three-day, all-expenses-paid trip to Jekyll Island this July 17, 18, and 19. Army National Guard Pvt. Demetrius Smith has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Sill, in Lawton, Okla. Smith is a 2010 graduate of Lovejoy High School, and is the son of Kelli Smith, of Jonesboro, and Charles Giles, of Wellford, S.C.
