MCDONOUGH — The Lady Wolverines needed every one of their penalty kicks to survive against Northgate in the first round of the Region 3-AAAA playoffs Wednesday.
Union Grove out-scored the Vikings 5-3 on penalty kicks after 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime left the game in a scoreless tie.
The No. 5-ranked Lady Wolverines (14-0-1) advance to play No. 2-ranked and defending state champion McIntosh (14-1-1) in the region semifinals Friday at 5:30 p.m.
McIntosh defeated Union Grove in the region semifinals last season.
Ashley Nagy, Nikki LeFevre, Catelyn Stallings and Michaela Gardner converted their penalty kicks before Brianna Davis hit the game-clincher.
Gardner also had 15 saves.
Union Grove 4, Ola 3
MCDONOUGH — The Wolverines led early and held on for a Region 3-AAAA win on the road.
No. 10-ranked Union Grove (17-5, 10-2) scored three runs in the first inning to jump out on the Mustangs (11-11, 6-6). The Wolverines were led offensively by Travis Bergen, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Cole Murphy, who had a hit and drove in a run.
Matt Anderson got the win with 6 2/3 strong innings, while Chris Thompson earned the save.
With the win, Union Grove clinched the outright No. 1 seed in its sub-region.
The Wolverines close out the regular season Friday at ninth-ranked Starr’s Mill at 7 p.m.
Jonesboro, Mundy’s Mill reschedule
Jonesboro and Mundy’s Mill were forced to reschedule their games due to weather.
The Cardinals (15-4, 11-2 in Region 4-AAAA) were supposed to play Morrow, but will play a make-up game Saturday, April 28, at noon.
Mundy’s Mill (13-6, 12-2) moved its game against Tri-Cities to today at 6 p.m.
Mundy’s Mill has a half-game lead over Jonesboro for second place in the region.
