SCHOOL NOTEBOOK: April 25, 2012

Thursday

The School Council of Drew High School is scheduled to meet Thursday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m., in the Freshmen Commons. The school is located at 6237 Garden Walk Boulevard, in Riverdale. The meeting is open to the public.

Saturday

Clayton County Public Schools will host “500 Women Stand In the Gap” event on Saturday, April 28, from 8:30 a.m., to noon, at Mundy’s Mill High School located at 9652 Fayetteville Road in Jonesboro. For more information, call (678) 817-3000.

Monday

The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its work session Monday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m., at the Clayton County Public Schools Administrative Complex, 1058 Fifth Ave., in Jonesboro.

Notes

The Clayton County Parks and Recreation Department invites seventh- and eighth-grade students to participate in the third annual scholarship opportunity to Jekyll Island. Students will have to write a 250-word-or-less essay about an outdoor activity they wish to participate in (must choose from a designated list outlined by the Georgia Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights). The deadline to submit all essays and application is April 30, 2012. A total of 12 students will be chosen to attend a three-day, all-expenses-paid trip to Jekyll Island this July 17, 18, and 19. The Clayton County Public Schools Career Technical and Agriculture Education (CTAE) department is conducting a business expo Saturday May 5, from 10 a.m., to 1 p.m., for the middle school students to become associated with the business leaders in our community. Air Force Reserved Airman Khiry Hooper has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas. Hooper is the daughter of Natasha Hooper, of Jonesboro, and Reginald Hooper, of Knoxville, Tenn.

Marine Corps Pvt. Stefanie Barham has graduated from basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, in Parris Island, S.C. Barham is the daughter of Angelique Barham, of Rex, Ga.

The Clayton County Public Library System offers many services to students, including online practice tests and tutorials in math, reading and writing, as well as test-preparation materials for the SAT, ASVAB, GED, TOEFFL, and Occupational Aptitude Tests.
