Union Grove girls’ tennis cruised to a 4-1 victory over host Lovejoy in the first round of the Class AAAA tournament Wednesday.
The Lady Wolverines got wins from Nos. 1 and 3 singles matches and both doubles matches for the win.
Their second-round opponent is still to be determined. All second round matches must be completed by Wednesday, May 2.
Despite dropping a match at No. 2 singles, Union Grove (18-4) handled Lovejoy with relative ease.
Sara Watson won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Sydney Neese got a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Abigail Atkins and Kayla Montgomery won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Sarah Beck and Rebecca Hart won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Luella 11, Pike County 6
The Lions continued their hot hitting with a come-from-behind victory on the road to end their regular season.
No. 5-ranked Luella (19-6, 13-1) had five players with multi-hit performances, led by D.J. Carlisle, who finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. That helped the Lions come back from a 6-5 deficit in the fourth inning.
It was the fifth straight game Luella scored at least 10 runs and sixth consecutive win.
John Goodman went 3-for-4 with a double, Chase Scott finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, Vincent Jackson went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Terrance Worthy had a 2-for-4 night.
Lions senior Matt Kelley entered the game in relief to earn the victory.
Luella is expected to host Coffee County on Friday, May 4, in the Class AAAAA first round.
Mundy’s Mill 14, Creekside 3
The Tigers cruised to a Region 4-AAAA victory on the road to maintain possession of second place in the region.
Mundy’s Mill (18-6, 17-2) can clinch second place with a win at Jonesboro today at 5:30 p.m.
Corey Harmon led the Tigers with a 3-for-4 night that included a home run and five RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Darius Wheeler got the win, allowing only five hits.
Rashad Crawford and Trey Matthews both went 2-for-4, and Rodney Smith went 2-for-3 with a home run.
