A Morrow woman, who had just left a group of friends at a Tara Boulevard nightclub, died early Saturday when she was repeatedly run over while trying to cross the busy roadway, Clayton County police said.
Sempathy Canty, 21, was leaving J Paul’s nightclub, at 6510 Tara Blvd., Jonesboro, at approximately 2 a.m., on Saturday, when she was hit by approximately five cars, according to police spokesperson Officer Charlene Watson-Fraser. The accident happened just south of the Tara Boulevard-Old Dixie Highway split.
Fraser said the driver of the first vehicle that hit Canty stopped, and called 911. The police spokesperson added the drivers of the other vehicles that hit young woman did not stop, however, and Canty died in the roadway. “They may have thought they ran over a dog or something,” Fraser explained. She also said Canty’s friends were still in the nightclub when the accident happened.
“She was just walking by herself,” Fraser said.
Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to learn if Canty had been drinking before she crossed the street, the police spokesperson said. She added officers do not know why Canty was crossing the street, and have not charged anyone because the case is still under investigation.
