Former NFL player charged with abandoning son

JONESBORO — A former NFL player bonded out of the Clayton County Jail after being arrested Tuesday on child-abandonment charges.

Jamal Lafitte Lewis was arrested Tuesday and booked into the jail about 10:49 p.m. He bonded out Wednesday about 12:07 a.m. Lewis, 32, of Atlanta was charged with child abandonment.

According to Clayton Magistrate Court documents, Lewis was a no-show to a June 6 pre-issuance hearing requested by Juanita Johnson, the mother of his son. Johnson alleges Lewis has not had contact with their child, Landon Johnson, for more than a year. She also alleges Lewis last paid $2,000 in child support April 1.

The two never married and Johnson lives in Forest Park with her son, who will be 7 in October, according to court records.

Lewis attended Douglass High School in Atlanta and the University of Tennessee. He played for the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns before retiring from the NFL three years ago.

Lewis filed for bankruptcy in Atlanta in April, claiming to be millions of dollars in debt. He also owns 50 percent of an indoor water park in Columbus, Ohio.
