Authority recognized for an outstanding budget

JONESBORO — For the eighth year in a row, the Clayton County Water Authority’s finance department has been recognized for outstanding governmental budgeting by the federal and Canadian governments.

Spokeswoman Suzanne Brown said the Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting. The Authority was also recognized by Canada’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

“This marks the eighth year in a row that the Authority has received the awards, which are the only national awards program in governmental budgeting,” she said. “There are only 1,250 recipients of the award of all the state and local governmental entities, school districts, colleges and universities, authorities and retirement systems that exist in the United States and Canada.”

Authority Board Chairman Pete McQueen said the awards are well-deserved.

“Our finance staff does a great job preparing a sound financial plan for the Authority,” he said. “We are very proud of the work they do and the recognition they receive from their peers.”

Brown said the guidelines used are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated proficient in all four categories and the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories to get the awards.
