RIVERDALE — Georgia Power and Habitat for Humanity officials have opened the door to home ownership and energy efficiency for four Clayton County senior citizens, the company has announced.

Volunteers from the Georgia Power Metro South region office spent the summer working with Southern Crescent Habitat for Humanity officials to build four energy-efficient townhomes in the Tara Oaks Senior Living Community in Riverdale. Georgia Power Metro South Region Manager John D’Andrea turned the keys over last week to the new homeowners, who are Willie Walker, Liz Regulus, Sarah Juhan and Connie Harris.

“This has been a very rewarding experience for everyone at Georgia Power involved in this endeavor,” said D’Andrea in a written statement. “We are so pleased to have been able to be a part of this development. We know these ladies will enjoy these homes for many years to come.”

Construction began in May and more than 250 Georgia Power staff and volunteers helped build on the homes, which are designed to comply with the EarthCents New Homes energy efficiency standards, according to the company.

The EarthCents standards are designed to increase energy efficiency through quality insulation, advanced windows coatings, use of advanced techniques intended to eliminate cracks and sealing holes and efficient heating and cooling equipment, according to Georgia Power’s website.
