JONESBORO — A burglary suspect died Thursday after a struggle with Clayton County police officers, two of whom also were injured during the altercation, said authorities.
Officer Phong Nguyen did not release the name of the suspect and said the investigation has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
GBI spokesman John Bankhead said Friday afternoon that an autopsy on the suspect was performed at the Crime Lab but nothing conclusive was learned.
“Autopsy results are pending toxicology and histology and medical history,” he said.
Bankhead said he couldn’t release the suspect’s name because next of kin had not been notified.
Nguyen said officers went to Georgetown Court off Tara Boulevard Thursday about 11:15 a.m. in reference to a suspected burglary in progress. Police found two suspects inside the residence and put one in custody without incident, he said.
“The second suspect resisted arrest and a physical altercation ensued,” said Nguyen.
Two officers were hurt during the scuffle and transported to area hospitals with minor injuries, he said. One suspect was also injured and transported to the hospital.
The suspect later died and the cause of death is unknown, pending an autopsy, said Nguyen.
Police said both suspects were about 30 years old. One suspect was arrested at the incident location and transported to the Clayton County Jail.
Nguyen did not release any information on the jailed inmate.
