Dixie Johnson Strickland passed away peacefully in Blue Ridge, Ga., on Aug. 25, 2012. A native of Gwinnett County, she was the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Andrew Johnson of Grayson. Following her graduation from Snellville High School, she attended the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia (now GSU). While she was a student in Atlanta, she began working for Southern Bell. She was in the first graduating class of Truett-McConnell Junior College. After graduating from TMC, she taught typing and business classes to soldiers returning from World War II at the new college. She later attended Carson-Newman College, where she earned a B.A. degree. 

In 1952, she married Rev. John Strickland and began working for New England Bell in New Haven, Conn. When the couple returned to Georgia, she taught seventh grade in Gwinnett County. Several years later, she earned her professional teaching credentials from Mercer University.  She taught reading and first grade in Bibb County before moving to the Atlanta area. In 1968, she began a 24-year teaching career in Clayton County. In 1975, she received her M.Ed. from Georgia State University. From 1969 until her retirement in 1992, she was a first grade teacher at B.C. Haynie Elementary in Morrow. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1999. Survivors include one daughter, Cynthia (Thomas) Smith, of Ellijay and formerly of Fayetteville; two grandsons, Thomas IV and Andrew; sisters, Ruth (Leonard) Smith and Penny (Marvin) Burton, of Grayson; sister, Brenda (Maurice) Robbins, of Chestnut Mountain; brother, Donald (Thelma) Johnson, of Atlanta; brother, Jim (Coriene) Johnson, of Suwanee;  nieces and nephews.      

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 1, at McDonough Road Baptist Church in Fayetteville at 11a.m. The body will lie in state and the family will greet visitors in the church’s courtyard from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at Camp Memorial Park.
