Nature trips an option for Labor Day weekend

MORROW — People looking to enjoy some outdoor fun during the Labor Day weekend can save travel time and gas money by spending the holiday weekend in Clayton County. A couple of options include Clayton County Water Authority’s (CCWA) reservoir areas and Newman Wetlands Center, both offering inexpensive outdoor activities.

CCWA’s fishing reservoirs, The Blalock and Shamrock Reservoirs, which are located at 2610 Shamrock Road (off of Freeman Road) in Jonesboro, will be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. The J.W. Smith Reservoir, which is located at 143 Northbridge Road in Hampton, will also be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

There is a $5 daily fee per vehicle for Clayton County residents at all CCWA reservoirs. Non-county residents are required to pay $10 per vehicle.

There is a season pass available for Clayton County residents planning several trips to the reservoirs this year. The cost for a seasonal pass is $30. Non-county residents pay $40 for a season pass. The season pass is good at CCWA reservoirs from March through October.

The Newman Wetlands Center (NWC), located at 2755 Freeman Road, features a nature trail and picnic area that will be open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

The NWC's half-mile trail and picnic areas provide visitors an opportunity to enjoy nature while learning the importance of preserving wetlands environments and conserving natural resources.

This center is handicapped-accessible and stroller-friendly.

Visitors walking through the wetlands trails could catch a glance of some of the many wildlife species that either stop over during migration or take advantage of this habitat for nesting or permanent residence. In addition to over 130 bird species, visitors have spotted beaver, river otter, fox, raccoon, muskrat, deer, wild turkey, opossum, mink and many species of reptiles, insects, and amphibians.

Dogs and other pets are not allowed at the NWC facility.
