JONESBORO — Clayton County police officers are conducting a special operation against street crimes.
Officers gathered Monday at what used to be the America’s Best Value Inn and Suites hotel, which is located at 6358 Old Dixie Highway in Jonesboro. Members of the Strategic Methods Against Street Harms — or SMASH, for short — joined patrolmen to start “Operation Safe Holiday.”
“Operation Safe Holiday will continue through the holidays to combat crime in targeted areas of unincorporated Clayton County,” said Clayton County Police spokesperson C. Ashmore.
Lt. Scott Stubbs is the commander of the SMASH unit. He met with more than 20 officers at the hotel to give instructions and the locations of the target areas.
Stubbs said the purpose of the operation is to target areas where the crime rate has increased, specifically because of burglaries.
“This is a suppression effort,” he said. “We are actively pursuing crime targets through our crime data, which is collected and analyzed daily.”
